Dog beds come in lots of different fabrics too, from suede, to leather, to corduroy, to fleece, to nylon, to quilted fabric.
The most practical type of dog bed is a washable bed. Being able to wash the beds when needed, you kill the breeding ground for fleas. Washing the bed, helps to extend the life of it and keeps your dog healthy.
You can find washable dog beds in most big box pet stores and small independent pet stores too. A lot of department stores carry them too. Or you can opt for convenience and buy them online.

Choose a fabric that will be comfortable for your dog. If your dog is short haired like a Chihuahua, a fluffy fabric like a fleece would e good. A long haired dog like Collie might prefer a smooth fabric like vinyl or nylon.
Also consider the size of the bed. Will it be big enough for your dog, or will your dog have trouble fitting in the bed?
And think about the color scheme in your home. You may not want a hot pink dog bed in a room full of earth tones.

Animal Print Cozy Dog Lounge Bed – M
Notice your dog’s sleeping style. Does you dog like to stretch out when he’s asleep or does he curl up in a ball? If he’s a stretcher, then a square or round pillow bed would be good. Get a larger size too. A donut dog bed is a good choice for the dog that likes to lean against something and curl up into a ball.

Dogs have very distinctive sleeping habits. Dog’s sleep half of their life away at about 13 hours a day.
Their sleep time varies according to the age of the dog and the breed.
Some dogs turn around in circles several times before lying down. This is going back to his roots when his ancestors would trample down the grass where they planned on sleeping by turning in circles. Later, it signified to other pack members that this was the dog’s spot for sleeping as he was preparing for slumber.
Temparatures may influence your dog’s sleeping habits. Your dog will curl up in a ball when he is cold.
Puppies do this with their siblings to conserve warmth.
Have you ever seen your dog “run in his sleep”? He will lay on his side while asleep, and move his legs in a running motion. We can only assume he is dreaming he is running.
Some dogs, just as some humans sleep with their eyes open.
At times, you can notice your dog’s eyes and whiskers twitch.
Most of your dog’s sleep time is done so in a light stage of sleep.
Dogs will awake quickly if there is sudden noise or activity around them. This goes back to their days of living in the wild and hunting (or being hunted).
Be careful about allowing young children to disturb your dog when he is sleeping. If he awakes suddenly by being poked or tripped over by a child, he may instinctively snap at the child before realizing what he is doing.
That is probably where the phrase “let sleeping dogs lie” comes from.
Just like children, it’s sometimes hard to get your dog to settle down and get back to sleep if he is startled awake at odd hours. And also, just like with children, it’s best to establish routines for your dog from the very beginning.
Set routines for sleeping, walks, eating, even potty times.
Decide from the time you get your dog, where your dog will sleep. Some people allow their dogs to sleep in the bed with them. Others prefer for their dog to sleep in their crate or their own dog bed.
A personal note about letting dogs sleep in your bed. I have 4 dogs and 3 of them prefer to sleep in the bed with me (I have a king sized bed). But my dogs sleep during the day in other parts of the house so I have dog beds in various places. I have two in my home office, one in the family room and one in my bedroom.
On your dog’s first night with you, he may feel scared and confused. If he’s a puppy just separated from his litter, he is used to sleeping close to others.
A hot water bottle covered with a fleece blanket may help your puppy feel more at home in his new bed. Another tip is to put an old fashioned ticking clock in his bed to mimic the sound of his mother’s beating heart.
Do not give in and put the puppy in bed with you unless you plan on it being a nightly thing. If it is only occasionally allowed, you puppy will feel like he is being “driven from the pack” on the nights you don’t allow him in your bed. Giving your dog a good walk before bedtime will help him fall asleep easier.
Here’s a tip to help keep your dog’s anxiety level low when you are not at home. Put a shirt or other article of clothing you have recently worn in his bed. Make sure it’s an old item of clothing that you don’t care about. The smell of you will soothe your dog when you are not there.
Thanks for visiting Washable Dog Beds!

Dogs are so funny at times – he looks so uncomfortable in that little bed! We used to have a GSD who would let my rabbit out of its hutch and then squeeze himself into it. Why? We will never know.

I preffer the dog beds you can wash fully. Those that have a zip cover only look clean they never really smell that fresh after washing only the cover.

Those extra large beds are awesome! I bought a memory foam bed after owning several of the cotton padded dog beds that lost their thickness from use over the years. I’ve had the memory foam bed now for at least 2 years and it is great, I just wash the cover!

I think these washable dog beds are great. I have tried a few different types for my dogs, but the prefer to sleep on the tiles on the floor. I guess because it is a bit cooler.

I’m sure my dog will love her new bed. Most of the time she is under the sofa because it’s dark and cold there.

I really, highly recommend that whatever bed you choose it should be easily washable in your washing machine or have a removable cover. Recently I bought a soft Terry pet Bed for my dog, Tintu. It can be easily washable in the washing machine. It is very good and Tintu likes it very much and had a sound sleep in his new bed. But what the problem now is my mom doesn’t like the whole idea of washing our clothes in the same washer as the dogs’ things. So what am going to do is to wash it with my own hand! But am little confused about the detergent. Actually what type of detergent and soap should I use? Is there any specification? If, can you please specific name. Thanks.

I love dogs.
When I heard about washable dog beds I was amazed.
Maybe I should get one for my puppies.
I have two puppies, one is brown and the other one is white with some black dots.
They’re cute so I need a cute bed for them.

As our Tommy is severely suffering from joint pains and muscle bruises nowadays our veterinary doctor suggested orthopedic beds to comfort him. Moreover, his bed is made up of foam to cushion his joints and bones greatly. Well, it is easily washable and he is able to have a sound nap with warmth in his bed nowadays. And I could see some more bed collections on your blog by the way. Nice stuff!
